What Cities: Skylines 2 Could Look Like
The release of a sequel to Cities: Skylines has the potential to leverage modern hardware and game design, resulting in an even more robust and immersive city building experience. While the Cities: Skylines franchise currently holds a dominant position in the genre, the fact that SimCity has been dormant signals that this may not be the case forever. Additionally, some of the downloadable content packs have felt like recycled material, which could be an indication that a sequel is in the works.
The potential release of Cities: Skylines 2 presents an opportunity to build upon the success of its predecessor and create a more definitive and compelling experience. Colossal Order, the game’s developer, can leverage the knowledge and insights gained from the original game’s success and incorporate community feedback and all of the original downloadable content to improve the sequel from the get-go. Drawing inspiration from the controversial 2013 release of SimCity could also prove beneficial for Colossal Order. In particular, the modular building add-ons for civic structures, such as police stations, were met with great enthusiasm by players. These add-ons expanded a building’s capacity and provided additional services, making for a more engaging and interactive experience than simply watching a progress bar fill up or placing an upgraded version of a building on top of an existing plot. City builder fans widely agree that this modular approach was one of SimCity’s strengths, and Colossal Order should take note and consider implementing similar features in their own game.
The release date for a sequel to Cities: Skylines remains uncertain. However, given the game’s tremendous success for both Paradox and Colossal Order, it is reasonable to assume that an official announcement will be made in due time.
